North Quays Update – November ’25

Listen to Senior Engineer Seán Dobbs on the Waterford North Quays Project

The Waterford North Quays Project is moving from vision to reality and in this update, Senior Engineer Seán Dobbs from Waterford City & County Council talks us through the latest progress on site.

As Seán explains, the North Quays is transforming into a brand-new sustainable urban quarter, combining state investment in public infrastructure with significant private development, a total investment of around half a billion euro.

On the Ferrybank side, all access infrastructure including new roads, bridge, cycleways, and set-down areas, is on track for completion early in the New Year. Across the river, the South Quays Plaza will follow closely, wrapping up in early 2026.

The Sustainable Transport Bridge now spans the Suir in full, with its opening sections operating as intended. Over the coming months, crews will focus on finishing touches such as surfacing, glass panels, railings, lighting, seating, and architectural details, the elements that make it both operational and beautiful.

Seán also outlines the next phases: the Transport Hub, which continues through 2026, and Irish Rail’s new signalling and electrical systems, essential before the new train station can open. These works, alongside major railway flood defences, will continue into 2027, when all parts of the project come together for a coordinated opening.

In the meantime, both the Ferrybank infrastructure and South Quays Plaza will open to the public early next year — marking huge milestones for Waterford’s regeneration.

Step by step, Waterford is building a more connected, sustainable, and vibrant regional capital for the South East.
